Shear Stress in the ShaftWhen a shaft is subjected to a torque or twisting a shearing stress is produced in the shaft. The shear stress varies from zero in the axis to a maximum at the outside surface of the shaft. The shear stress in a solid circular shaft in a given position can be expressed as:τ = T r / J (1)whereτ = shear stress (Pa, psi)T = twisting moment (Nm, in lb)r = distance from center to stressed surface in the given position (m, in)J = Polar Moment of Inertia of Area (m 4, in 4)Note. the ' Polar Moment of Inertia of an Area' is a measure of a shaft's ability to resist torsion. The ' Polar Moment of Inertia' is defined with respect to an axis perpendicular to the area considered. It is analogous to the ' - which characterizes a beam's ability to resist bending - required to predict deflection and stress in a beam.' Polar Moment of Inertia of an Area' is also called ' Polar Moment of Inertia', ' Second Moment of Area', ' Area Moment of Inertia', ' Polar Moment of Area' or ' Second Area Moment'. Polar Moment of Inertia vs.

This course explores the topic of solid objects subjected to stress and strain. The methods taught in the course are used to predict the response of engineering structures to various types of loading, and to analyze the vulnerability of these structures to various failure modes.

There is no set, correct number, there is only the correct number for your bow.Essentially, shoot a few arrows, unstring, twist, shoot a few more. Eventually you'll come to a point where the vibration, hand-shock, and noise from your bow diminish considerably. Now, twist a bit more, if all of the above effects increase, then untwist back to where they are at a minimum. This is the correct brace height for your bow, measure it. From this point on, when you replace a string, twist until you get to this brace height.
While we're on this topic, what's an expected amount of stretching any particular string might go through.? Sins of a solar empire cheats. I just got a new string and was told by the clerk that it shouldn't stretch too much. We got it to my brace height and when I went to shoot it this weekend it stretched probably 2+ inches over the course of 2.5ish hours of shooting. I kept twisting it back up to an 8' brace, I probably have over 40 twists in it at this point (determined 20 full turns gave me about an inch in brace height).
