What error does Partition Wizard give? Does it create the partition or does it fail? If Partition Wizard did complete the partition and format, are you saying it still shows as uninitialized in Disk Management?A disk that asks to be initialized is usually a clean unformatted disk. But, you said you deleted an old partition. There was an existing partition on the drive and Windows still said it was unintialized?Download and run the long and short test.
You may want to attach the drive to a different SATA port if possible.Edit: There was not any data you needed on the 500GB disk was there? If so, they I would stop and you need to recover the data if possible after deleting the partition on the 500GB drive.Edited by JohnC21, 15 November 2015 - 11:52 AM. After deleting the old partition, formatting, and creating the new partition It still shows uninitialized in disk management. So there is a partition, and windows is still saying uninitialized.
I just pulled the hdd out of the laptop and installed it in my desktop and everything works perfectly in my desktop. Unfortunately I can't try a different sata port on the laptop as I only have the one free.
I'll try running seatools, but since the drive works on my desktop, it stands to reason that it's not a hdd issue. It would be an amazing coincidence if the sata connector on the laptop just happened to go back while reinstalling an OS, so I'm leaning toward some kind of software issue. If anyone has any other ideas, I'd really appreciate it.Update: I downloaded and ran SeaTools and it doesn't detect the drive so I'm unable to scan it.Edited by SinisterMatti, 15 November 2015 - 12:11 PM.
Sorry, I missed the laptop part in your first post. Can you switch drives on the laptop?
Does this laptop have two drives as default or did you use an adapter in the optical drive location? If the disk is detected in the other PC I would not bother with Seatools but it is strange that Partition Wizard can detect and format the drive and Windows does not see it as initialized. To check if this is a Windows issue download Puppy Linux and burn the iso file. Boot the disk and at the Puppy desktop you will see your hard drives in the lower left. The SSD would be sda and the HDD most likely sdb. Clicking once on the 500GB drive will mount the drive and open a File Manager. If Puppy successfully mounts the drive then we are dealing with a Windows issue.Edit: Does this computer have a BIOS or is it UEFI?Edited by JohnC21, 15 November 2015 - 12:18 PM. Do you see any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager, possibly on the HDD controllers?
What is the model number of the MSI? You may need to install the Chipset or Storage Control drivers if this was a clean install of Windows. The only exclamation mark is for network controller (I haven't been able to find the driver for the wifi adapter yet).
The 500gb drive shows up under Disk Drives, labeled as '500Gb.' Properties says the device is functioning properly, and there are no updated drivers available. The laptop is an MSI GT683R. I downloaded and installed the Chipset drivers immediately after reformatting. MSI doesn't have a Storage Control driver for this laptop available for download unfortunately. Then I am not sure what the issue is unfortunately.
I noticed in the specs here that the drive was listed as RAID 0. In BIOS is your setting listed as RAID or AHCI? I also noticed that the computer listed as having Windows 8. I am pretty sure SecureBoot is disabled as you would not have been able to install Windows 7.I noticed on the the Intel Rapid Storage Controller driver is listed. I would install that. I also noticed a number of wireless drivers but I can't give you the correct one until you provide the Vendor and Device ID line I requested above.I can get you the wireless driver if needed.
Right click the Device in Device Manager and select Properties. Under the Details tab select Hardware Ids in the dropdown box. Copy and post the first line. You may want to do a sfc /scannow at an elevated command prompt. This will look for any missing or corrupt files.
I don't know how I missed that Rapid Storage Controller. Installed it now. Bios is listing AHCI. The laptop originally came with Windows 7, but when windows 8 came out they updated their website and the remaining laptops with windows 8. This one came from the factory with windows 7.
I ran SFC /ScanNow from an admin command prompt and didn't have any results. I went into Partition Wizard again, deleted the partition, created a new one, and formatted just in case something was wrong, but no results. Here's a picture in case I'm missing something. (sorry about the picture quality).Edited by SinisterMatti, 15 November 2015 - 01:38 PM. I am not sure it makes a difference but see if formatting the partition as primary instead of logical works.

I can't remember the 8MB partition being at the beginning of the disk using Partition Wizard. After partitioning as primary move the NTFS partition to the beginning of the disk if the 8MB partition is first. I am starting to run out ideas on this unfortunately.Edit: If the disk still shows as not initialized after using a primary partition try the following. Then partition and format as primary.Edited by JohnC21, 15 November 2015 - 01:57 PM.
Table of Contents.Disk unknown not initialized is AnnoyingHi, I have a problem with my Western Digital external hard drive. When I tried to plug it to my computer, it said that it’s successfully installed; however, I couldn’t find it in “my computer”. After that, I tried to enter to Disk Management, there also said the disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated and prompt a message like this: you must initialize a disk before logical disk manager can access it. Can you please help me to recover data as it contains all my pictures? Thanks. The scenario mentioned above is known to be the case of “Disk unknown not initialized” error, which commonly occurs in Windows version 7, 8 and 10.
But, do not worry! If you ever fall into the same situation as this article will serve you with the possible solutions to fix the problem without losing your precious data.Don’t Miss: What causes the “Disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated” issue? There can be multiple reasons like partition loss and MBR (Master Boot Record) corruption associated with the prompt “Disk unknown not initialized” issue. Some of the other factors are listed below:. Viruses and Malware:. Damaged/Corrupted file system:.
Presence of bad sectors. Any kind of physical damage:. Unsafe removal of the storage deviceVarious solutions can help in getting rid of “Disk unknown not initialized” issue, but there are chances of data loss when applying them to sort out the problem. Hence, at the onset, we will recover all the valuable data using in the following contents.
“I’m using my external hard drive for backing up important data from Windows computer and was pretty happy with the way it worked. But yesterday when I plugged in my removable hard drive, it didn’t show up in My Computer. When I checked the Disk Management, it displayed that the hard drive was not initialized; I also checked the properties of my external hard drive and it showed as 0 byte. Does this mean that all data from my hard drive is lost?”No.
That’s not true, this kind of problem usually occurs due to hardware exception in your hard drive. However you can initialize the hard disk and solve the problem, procedure to initialize hard disk is given below:. Go to “Disk Management”. Right Click on the drive that needs to be initialized. Click “Initialize Disk” optionThe above method initializes your selected hard disk; however the only problem with initializing the hard drive is that it results in complete data loss from hard drive. Hence it is suggested to first backup the necessary data from your storage drive before initializing. However, if you have lost data from your storage drive after initializing no need to worry because lost data can be retrieved using a good data recovery software. Why hard disk is shown as not initialized?Damaged Windows file system, occurrence of bad sectors on hard disk, deadly virus / malware infection on boot sectors, corruption to File Allocation Table (FAT) and many others are some of the main reasons due to which Windows operating system tells you to initialize the hard drive which eventually results in complete data loss.
And now if you are thinking or lost due to any other reason, answer would be a YES.Data Recovery Software:is a well known drive recovery application to retrieve data from hard disk that is not initialized. The software has built-in advanced algorithm to find and rescue data from hard disk drive on Windows platforms. This application is compatible enough to, 10, 7, XP, Server 2003 & 2008, and windows 2000. In addition to Computer's internal hard drive, it also recovers data from external hard drives, USB drives, memory cards, iPods and other storage media. It supports recovery of data from FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, NTFS5, ExFAT and ReFS drives/partitions. Furthermore, recovering lost or missing data from hard disk after operating system installation, reinstallation, formatting, reformatting or re-partitioning, etc is possible with the aid of this utility.

I was using Seagate 500GB USB external hard disk for my backup storage. I have upto 300GB of important files which includes family photos, videos, movies and songs. One day morning when i plugged it into my computer it wasn't show up in explorer while the safety removal icon is show up on tray. In Device manager it is showing that the device is working properly.
But in Disk Management the device is show up Unknown andNot Initialized. When i tried to initialize it shows Data Error(Cyclic Redundancy Check). There was no physical damage on that device before this problem. Please any one help me to get rid of this problem without losing the data. I need my valuable data.:(. Hi,Based on my research, Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) is bit of mathematics used to ensure that your data is OK when being transferred. It's a checking procedure thatquickly identifies when data has been damaged.

Windows Disk Unknown Not Initialized
If you have recently installed a new internal or external hard drive or SSD and you’ve noticed that its status on the left side of the Disk Management tool states “Unknown Not Initialized”, this indicates that Windows can’t initialize the disk and that you won’t be able to use this new SSD or hard drive. You can encounter this kind of issue randomly and not just with new hard drive or SSD but also with existing drives. There are times when you won’t be able to find your drive or partition in the File Explorer. In such case, you have to check the Disk Management if your drive or partition is there physically. You also have to check if you can see it as Not Initialized.
If it is, then this means that the disk or partition does not have a valid signature that is if it’s not registered with the system properly. Note that a disk is registered when you format it at least once so if the disk was available before, then it could be somehow corrupted. To resolve the problem, you can try to initialize the disk manually or bring it online and add drive letter. You can also try checking the Device Manager for issues or check the cable physically.Option 1 – Try to manually initialize the diskSince initializing the disk is the most common way to resolve the “Unknown Not Initialized” error, this is what you have to try first. To initialize the disk manually, you have to open the Disk Management from the WinX menu by tapping Win + X keys and selecting Disk Management. From there, you can find the non-initialized disk.
Right click on it and select the “Initialize Disk” option. Next, select the partition style. It is recommended that you use the MBR option instead of the GPT or GUID Partition Table.
